Saving the Iris Cedreti (59)

In the Cedars region (Al Arz), above Bsharri in Lebanon, grows Iris cedreti Dinsmore, an iris species endemic to this single area of Mount Lebanon. It blooms every May, at an altitude of about 1,900 metres, and is listed by the IUCN as critically endangered. Cedrar, a large tourism complex project, now threatens more than half of its natural habitat. Facing this pressure, Doctor Youssef Tawk has spent years working to protect the Lebanese cedar and this iris: he has planted tens of thousands of cedar trees and, with the help of his family and volunteers, saved thousands of iris plants, dug up with their bulb intact and replanted at preserved sites. 

The horsemen of Djougou (399)
