France covers approximately 548,000 km² in Western Europe, with a population exceeding 66.7 million in mainland territory. The country holds 56 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Mont-Saint-Michel, the Palace of Versailles, and the banks of the Seine in Paris. The capital, Paris, concentrates most of the country's political, economic and cultural life, while Lyon, Marseille and Bordeaux rank among its major regional cities. A republic comprising 18 regions, five of them overseas, France stands out for the diversity of its landscapes, from Atlantic and Mediterranean coastlines to mountain ranges and river valleys, as well as for a gastronomic and artistic heritage recognized worldwide.

Germany covers approximately 357,000 km² in Central Europe, with a population exceeding 83.6 million, making it the most populous country in the European Union. The country holds 51 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the third-highest total in the world, including the Museum Island in Berlin, Cologne Cathedral, and the palaces and parks of Potsdam. Berlin, the capital, reunified since 1990 after the fall of the Wall, concentrates the country's political life, while Munich, Hamburg and Cologne rank among its major regional cities. A federal republic composed of 16 Länder, Germany has built its contemporary identity on a history marked by division and reunification, and on a leading cultural and industrial tradition in Europe. 

Italy (530)

Italy spans approximately 302,000 km² in Southern Europe, with a population close to 58.9 million. The country holds 61 UNESCO World Heritage sites, the highest number in the world, including the historic center of Rome, the historic centers of Florence and Venice, and the archaeological sites of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Rome, the capital, also encloses within its borders Vatican City, the world's smallest sovereign state. Cradle of the Roman Empire and later the Renaissance, Italy owes its cultural influence to an exceptional architectural and artistic heritage, carried forward today through fashion, design, and a cuisine inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list. 

Poland (27)

Poland covers approximately 312,700 km² in Central Europe, with a population close to 36.5 million. The country holds 17 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the historic center of Kraków, the Wieliczka Royal Salt Mine, in continuous operation since the thirteenth century, and the Auschwitz-Birkenau Nazi concentration and extermination camp, inscribed as early as 1979 in memory of the Holocaust. Warsaw, the capital, rebuilt after its near-total destruction during the Second World War, stands as a restoration effort praised by UNESCO. The Białowieża primeval forest, the last remnant of the great forest that once covered Europe, is home to the European bison, the continent's heaviest land mammal. 

Spain (255)

Spain spans approximately 506,000 km² on the Iberian Peninsula, with a population approaching 48 million. The country holds 50 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Alhambra and Generalife in Granada, the historic center of Córdoba, and the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. Madrid, the capital, and Barcelona, home to the singular work of Antoni Gaudí, rank among the country's largest cities. A constitutional monarchy organized into 17 autonomous communities, Spain stands out for the linguistic and cultural diversity of its regions — Castilian, Catalan, Basque, Galician — and for a living intangible heritage, from Andalusian flamenco to traditional festivals recognized by UNESCO. 

United Kingdom (30)

The United Kingdom covers approximately 242,000 km² in northwestern Europe, with a population exceeding 69.9 million, spread across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The country holds 29 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the megalithic site of Stonehenge and Avebury, a complex of Neolithic and Bronze Age prehistoric monuments, as well as Hadrian's Wall and the historic city of Bath. London, the capital, concentrates most of the country's political and economic life. A constitutional monarchy led by King Charles III, the United Kingdom has built its global cultural influence on a language that became international and on a leading industrial and literary heritage.
