Rome (Roma) has been the capital of Italy since 1871, when it replaced Florence, and is also the capital of the Lazio region. The municipality covers 1,287.36 km² and has about 2.75 million inhabitants. According to tradition, it was founded by Romulus on 21 April 753 BC. It lies on the Tiber and on seven hills: the Aventine, Caelian, Capitoline, Esquiline, Palatine, Quirinal and Viminal. Its historic centre has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1980. Vatican City, the only example of a country within a city, lies within Rome's municipal boundaries. The lowest point of the centre, at 13 m, lies at the foot of the Pantheon.
