Argentina (206)

Argentina covers roughly 2,780,000 km², stretching from the Andes mountains in the west to the Atlantic coast in the east, with a population close to 46 million. Buenos Aires, the capital, concentrates the country's political, economic and cultural life. As the world's eighth-largest country, it spans contrasting landscapes: the agricultural pampas, southern Patagonia, the arid northwest, and Iguazu Falls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Independent from Spain since 1816, Argentina was shaped by successive waves of European immigration, particularly from Italy and Spain. Tango, born in Buenos Aires' working-class neighborhoods, and asado, the country's traditional barbecue, remain among its most internationally recognized cultural expressions. 

Brazil (170)

Brazil, South America's largest country, covers around 8.5 million km² and is home to more than 213 million people, making it the world's seventh most populous nation. Its capital, Brasília, a planned city and UNESCO World Heritage site, showcases twentieth-century modernist architecture. The country holds 25 UNESCO-listed sites in total, including the historic centers of Salvador de Bahia, Olinda and Ouro Preto, legacies of Portuguese colonial rule, along with Iguaçu National Park. Rio de Janeiro, overlooked by the Christ the Redeemer statue, remains the country's most widely recognized image abroad. Portuguese, the official language, combined with a cultural blend of Indigenous, European and African heritage, shapes Brazil's distinctive identity. 

Chile (167)

Chile stretches over 4,000 km between the Andes mountains and the Pacific Ocean, covering about 756,000 km² with a population of roughly 19.6 million. Santiago, the capital, is home to nearly 40% of the national population. The country holds seven UNESCO World Heritage sites, including Rapa Nui National Park and its moai statues on Easter Island, the wooden churches of the Chiloé archipelago, and the historic port city of Valparaíso. The Atacama Desert in the north and the glacial fjords of Patagonia in the south reflect the country's extreme geographic diversity. Spanish is the official language, spoken alongside Indigenous languages such as Mapudungun. 

Peru (69)

Peru covers more than 1.28 million km² along South America's western edge, spanning a Pacific coastline, the Andes mountains and the Amazon rainforest, with a population of over 31.5 million. The country holds 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the historic sanctuary of Machu Picchu, an Inca citadel perched at 2,430 meters above sea level and rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911, as well as the city of Cusco, former capital of the Inca Empire, and the Nazca Lines. Spanish is spoken alongside Quechua and Aymara, both official languages. A world-renowned cuisine, a thriving Andean textile tradition and an exceptional pre-Columbian archaeological heritage make Peru one of the continent's most culturally rich countries. 

The Caribbean (79)

La région caribéenne réunit plus de 700 îles, îlots et cayes autour de la mer des Caraïbes, entre Amérique du Nord, Amérique du Sud et Amérique centrale. Elle regroupe une trentaine d'États et territoires, dont Cuba, la Jamaïque, Haïti, la République dominicaine et les Antilles françaises, pour une population régionale estimée à plus de 40 millions d'habitants. Peuplée dès le XVIe siècle par la traite négrière puis par l'arrivée d'engagés indiens et chinois, la région a développé une identité créole métissée, portée par des langues issues du français, de l'anglais, de l'espagnol et du néerlandais. La Vieille Havane, classée au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, illustre l'architecture coloniale caribéenne. Musique, religion et gastronomie y témoignent d'un brassage culturel unique au monde. 

United States (41)

Les États-Unis couvrent environ 9,15 millions de km², troisième superficie mondiale, pour une population dépassant 349 millions d'habitants. Le pays compte 27 sites inscrits au patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO, du Grand Canyon à la Statue de la Liberté, en passant par le parc national de Yellowstone, premier parc national créé au monde en 1872, et les habitats ancestraux de Mesa Verde. Société multiculturelle issue de vagues d'immigration successives, le pays mêle héritages autochtone, européen, africain, asiatique et hispanique. New York, Los Angeles et Chicago comptent parmi ses métropoles les plus emblématiques. L'anglais domine, mais l'espagnol progresse fortement, notamment dans le Sud-Ouest, reflet d'une identité nationale en perpétuelle recomposition.
