Val-de-Marne is a French department in the Île-de-France region, numbered 94. Its prefecture is Créteil, with Nogent-sur-Marne and L'Haÿ-les-Roses as sub-prefectures. Created in 1968 when the former Seine department was split up, it covers about 245 square kilometres and comprises 47 communes with close to 1.43 million inhabitants, making it one of the most densely populated departments in France. Crossed by the Seine and Marne rivers, it lies entirely within the Grand Paris metropolitan area. It is home to Orly Airport and notable sites such as the Bois de Vincennes and the Rungis international food market.
