Description:
Ouidah, Benin. New Gate of No Return. Frontal view from the inland side. Unlike the ocean-facing side, the golden frieze here depicts captives converging toward a central tree — an evocation of the Tree of Return, a Vodoun symbol of the spiritual bond between the deported and their African homeland. Through the arch stretches the long esplanade lined with solar streetlights connecting the beach to the town, historic starting point of the Slave Route. The structure inaugurated in January 2026 bears Fortuné Bandeira's bas-relief sculptures. January 2026.
