Description:
Ouidah, Benin. New Gate of No Return. Frontal view from the ocean side with municipal police barriers in the foreground during the 2026 Vodun Days festivities. The new monumental concrete gate, inaugurated in January 2026, replaces the original structure erected in 1995 at UNESCO's initiative as part of the Slave Route project. The high-relief golden frieze, created by Beninese artist Fortuné Bandeira, depicts the march of captives toward a sailing slave ship, while the columns bear hundreds of hand-crafted figurines in bas-relief. January 2026.
