Description:
Ouidah, Benin. New Gate of No Return. Three-quarter view from the ocean side. The white and dark-red concrete monument, inaugurated in early January 2026, stands 16.32 meters high and 23 meters long. The high-relief golden frieze depicts chained captives converging toward a slave ship at the center of the composition. The six columns are entirely covered with over 200 golden figurines, each hand-sculpted by Beninese artist Fortuné Bandeira. Visitors gather at the base of the monument facing the Atlantic. The gate replaced the 1995 original. January 2026.
