Description:
Ouidah, Benin. Gate of No Return (1995). Perspective view of the construction site from the esplanade, November 2025. The concrete ceremonial path, bordered by still-unfinished white low walls, crosses the foreground toward the original gate designed by architect Yves Ahouangnimon and inaugurated in 1995 at UNESCO's initiative as part of the Slave Route project. The bronzes by Dominique Kouas Gnonnou, the egungun by Yves Kpede, and the frieze by Fortuné Bandeira remain visible in the background. On the right, the new structure stands out with its green-mesh scaffolding. November 2025.
