Description:
Ouidah, Benin. Gate of No Return (1995). Frontal view from a slightly greater distance, revealing more of the sandy context surrounding the site. The concrete arch designed by Beninese architect Yves Ahouangnimon stands against the blue of the Atlantic, framed by the metal sculptures of Dominique Kouas Gnonnou and the egungun by Yves Kpede. Fortuné Bandeira's golden frieze crowns the whole composition. Mounds of construction sand in the foreground signal major renovation and development work underway as part of Benin's national heritage valorization program. November 2025.
