Description:
Bangkok, Thailand. Wat Pho, the reclining Buddha. The Reclining Buddha represents the historical Buddha during his last illness before entering final nirvana: he is lying on his right side, his head supported either by a cushion or by his right hand. He is on his deathbed. The reclining Buddha is an important iconographic motif in Buddhism.
The reclining Buddha at Wat Pho is forty-three meters long and fifteen meters high. The soles of his feet are inlaid with one hundred and eight mother-of-pearl “cartouches” representing the different states of Buddha.
Wat Pho is one of the largest Buddhist temples in Bangkok, covering an area of eight hectares. Its official name is "Wat Phra Chettuphon Wimon Mangkhalaram Ratchaworamahawihan". It is also called "Wat Phra Chettuphon", temple of the reclining Buddha.
The current temple dates from the 17th century and is located on an older temple, Wat Phodaram. Wat Pho is also home to an internationally renowned Thai massage school.
