Description:
Venice, Italy. Bridge of Sighs. The view of Venice from this bridge was the final view convicts had before going to prison. They would sigh at the beauty of Venice as the story goes. They probably also sighed because it was also the last glimpse of liberty they had. Hence the Italian name "Ponte dei sospiri". The bridge, designed by architect Antonio Contino (1566-1600) and made of white limestone, connects the interrogation rooms of the Doge's Palace to the prison. It was built between 1602 and 1614 and crosses over the Rio di Palazzo.
