Description:
Istanbul, Turquie. The Blue Mosque. Built between 1609 and 1616 under the rule of Ahmed I, the Blue Mosque, also known as Sultan Ahmed Mosque, is a functionning mosque that is also one of the main tourist attractions of Istanbul. The sultan's tomb is on site. It has six minarets, as many as the Holy Mosque of Mecca at the time and was one of the departure points for the Holy Pilgrimmage to Mecca. It's the thousands of predominantly blue tiles decorating the interior that give the mosque the "Blue Mosque" title. The Blue Mosque was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1985.
